JCR-UK is a genealogical and historical website covering all Jewish communities and
congregations throughout the British Isles and Gibraltar, both past and present.
NOTE: We are not the official website of the
Lancaster congregations, whose contact details are shown below.
Lancaster
Lancaster, in Northwest England, with a population of some 46,000, is the county town of
Lancashire. It is in the north of the county, closer to the county of Cumbria
and the Lake District than to industrial cities of South Lancashire. Lancaster
lies within the (larger) City of Lancaster, a local government district within
the non-metropolitan county of Lancashire. The district was formed in 1974 from
the merger of a number of local authorities - all in Lancashire (including the
municipal borough of Lancaster).
Jewish Community
There are only a small number Jews in living in Lancaster, Preston (some 20 miles to the South) and the surrounding region. However,
two small Jewish congregations or groups have emerged in recent year, both serving Cumbria
and the northern towns of Lancashire.
