Dagger Lane Synagogue

Address:

Dagger Lane, Hull, formerly known as Ten Faith Lane, Hull.(iii)

The synagogue, built in Tetra style, was situated on the west side of Dagger Lane about half way, with a gateway opening from Dagger Lane into a courtyard, which "then took its course to the end, nigh to the town walls where the synagogue stood."(iv)

Formation:

Formed in the seventeenth century.(v) This is the first known synagogue in Hull.

Closure:

In about 1700, the area had fallen into a state of decay and the synagogue was demolished.(vi)

Ritual:

Presumed Ashkenazi Orthodox

Ministers and Officers:

None known

Cemetery Details:

In 1774, when the Hull Town fortifications were levelled, human remains were found, each facing east, just inside the town walls, close to the former Dagger Lane synagogue, together with Jewish artefacts, all clearly attesting to the existence of a seventeenth century Jewish burial ground attendant to the synagogue.(ix)
