This is the Yocheved's/Jochebed's (Persky/Perski/Perskie) branch of the family. She was the 1st of Eliezer Mordechai ben Tzvi Persky's and his wife, Minnie, (Mindel), Disha bat Reb Eliyahu's children. Her family called Yocheved "Iocha."

The English spelling of the surname name can be either Persky, Perski or Perskie. The name was not meant to be spelled in English, but in Hebrew or Cyrillic. US officials spelled the names of newly arrived immigrants phonetically. Traditionally, Jews were known by Hebrew patronymic names -- ben or bat with the father’s name -- as is still the custom today in religious life. In Central and Eastern Europe, Jewish surnames did not become common until much later, circa 1800, and in a good number of cases were imposed by the non-Jewish authorities.

Eliezer Mordechai ben Tzvi Persky and his wife, Minnie Disha, immigrated to the US in 1883, along with their son, Jacob, and three daughters, Yochaved, Fanny, and Sadie after experiencing anti-Semitic persecution in what was then their home, Volozhin, the Russian Jewish Pale of Settlement. Here Jews were not permitted to own and farm land. With the assistance of the Alliance Israelite Universalle and the Baron Maurice de Hirsch Foundation they were able to come to this country, along with forty-three other families from similar backgrounds, all sharing the philosophy of the Am Olam Movement. These pioneers founded the first Jewish agricultural colony in the United States in Alliance/Norma/Brotmanville, NJ. Lazar's and Minnie's youngest son, Joseph B. Perskie, was their only child born in the United States, in 1885, on the farm in Alliance.

The Am Olam movement was a response to the stereotype of the Jew as an "urban parasite," and its constituents had vowed to prove to the world that they could be hardworking, land-tilling producers. "Our motto is labor in the fields," an Am Olam member explained, "and our goal is the physical and spiritual rejuvenation of our people. In free America, we Jews shall find a corner in which to rest our heads. We shall prove to the world that we are qualified for physical labor."

The agricultural colony still exists today in Norma, NJ, along with the original synagogue, buildings, a museum and cemetery, filled with tombstones "of those who toiled and sacrificed their lives in exchange for freedom which they found in the new world." (Jacob Perskie). The descendants of the original pioneers have become prominent citizens - physicians, lawyers, judges, elected officials, rabbis, artists, photographers, writers, manufacturers, teachers, businessmen and women who contribute much to our society.

We take great pride in our rich heritage and respect and admire the hardships our ancestors experienced to forge a better life for us all.

My grandfather, Jacob H. Perskie, (he changed the spelling of his name from "Persky" to "Perskie)," married Lena Abramowitz, daughter of Morris and Anna Abramowitz, who were also original settlers of the Alliance colony.

First Generation

Eliezer Mordechai ben Tzvi Persky was born November 1842 in Volozhin/Valozhyn, the Russian Pale of Settlement and died August 26, 1902 in Alliance, NJ. Eliezer's father, was named Tzvi. He was born in 1820 in Volozhin, the Jewish Pale of Settlement. I do not know his date of death nor whether he had a surname other than his Hebrew patronymic name.

Eliezer married Minnie, (Mindel), Disha bat Reb Eliyahu, born December 1844 in the Russian Jewish Pale of Settlement. "Disha or Dithy" are probably not Mindel's surname, but a middle name, as it means "Dinah," (as in the biblical "Dinah," who was the daughter of Jacob, one of the patriarchs of the Israelites, and Leah, his first wife). Minnie died in 1920 in Norma, NJ. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1883, (with 4 of their children - the 5th was born in the US), through Castle Garden, NY. They then moved to Alliance, Salem County, NJ, to become part of the original pioneering group in the Jewish agricultural settlement there. They begat five children - four were born either/or in Volozhin, or in Minsk, in what was then the govenment of Minsk, (Volozhin is situated 75 km away from Minsk, Russia). Their last child was born in Alliance, NJ. The 5 children are:

1) Yocheved Persky/Perskie - born December 1863 in Volozhin. She married Aaron Ruvinsky, born December, 1862, in the Russian Jewish Pale of Settlement. He changed his name from Ruvinsky to Rovine after arriving in the US. They married circa 1883 in New Jersey. Yochaved died in 1906 in Norma, NJ. The couple had 8 children. (See 2nd generation on this Homepage). Aaron died in 1935 in Philadelphia, PA.

2) Jacob H Perskie - born circa 1865 in either Volozhin or Minsk, Russia. Jacob changed the spelling of his surname from "Persky" to "Perskie" when he arrived in the US, and his siblings followed suit. He also added the middle name "Harrison" for William Henry Harrison, a former president of the US. He married Lena Abramowitz in 1891 in Atlantic City, NJ. Lena was born 22 June, 1875, in Russia, or possibly Romania. She and her family were amongst the original pioneering families at Alliance, NJ. She died 27 January, 1921 in Atlantic City, NJ. The couple had 13 children, (See 2nd generation on the Jacob H. Perskie Branch - yet to be completed). Jacob died on June 26, 1941 in Atlantic City, NJ. He was the official photographer and portrait painter for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1932 and 1936 presidential campaigns. His eldest son, Leon Perskie, was the photographer for the 1940 campaign, as Jacob was too ill at that time to work. Leon Perskie went on to become the official photographer for Presidents Truman, Kennedy and Johnson.

3) Fannie Perskie - born circa 1870 in Volozhin, the Russian Jewish Pale of Settlement. Her date of death is unknown at this time, but it probable that she died in the mid to late 1940s. She was alive when her father died in 1941. She married Joseph Jacobs, born in 1864 in Russia. They married in New Jersey and had 8 children. (See 2nd generation on the Fannie Perskie Branch - yet to be completed)). Joseph's date of death and place of death are unknown at this time.

4) Sadie Perskie - born circa 1875 in Volozhin, the Russian Jewish Pale of Settlement. She married Jacob Kurtz, in New Jersey. His date of birth and place of birth are presently unknown. The couple had 6 children. (See 2nd generation on the Sadie Perskie Branch - yet to be completed). Sadie died in 1947 in Philadelphia, PA.

5) Joseph B. Perskie - born July 20, 1885 in Alliance, Salem County, NJ. He gave himself the middle name "Bruce" because "he thought it sounded more distinguished than just plain 'Joseph Perskie.'" He married Beatrice "Batya" Masliansky, the daughter of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Masliansky, a "Maggid," (a wandering Jewish preacher whose sermons contained religious and moral instruction and words of comfort and hope), from Slutsk, Russian Jewish Pale of Settlement. Beatrice was born 07 June, 1890, in Russia. The couple married on 27 Nov, 1910, in New York City, NY. They had 3 children. (See 2nd generation on the Joseph B. Perskie Branch - yet to be completed). Joseph died on May 29, 1957. Justice Joseph B. Perskie was a distinguished member of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1933 to 1947. Beatrice died in January 1976 in Atlantic City, NJ.


*** What follows is the Persky/Rovine branch of the family, because Yocheved Persky/Perskie, who married Aaron Ruvinsky ("Rovine"), was Eliezer's and Mindel's first child. I am in the process of creating a Jacob H. Persky/Abramowitz branch of our family tree. He was Eliezer's and Minnie's 2nd child.

Second Generation

Yocheved (Jachebed) Perskie and Aaron Ruvinsky/Rovine had 8 children, as follows:

1) Rose Rovine - was born in March, 1884, in Philadelphia PA. She married Hyman Backman, born 29 July, 1879, in Alt Constantine, Russia. The couple married in June, 1904. They had 3 children, (see 3rd generation). Rose died in 1960 in Philadelphia, PA. Hyman Backman, died in May 1955 in Philadelphia, PA.

2) William Rovine - was born in 1885, in Norma, Salem County, NJ. He died in 1908 in Philadelphia at the age of 23. He never married.

3) Kitty Rovine - was born in December, 1889 in Norma, Salem County, NJ. She married Herman Brodsky on 27 October, 1914, in Philadelphia. They had 4 children (see 3rd generation). Herman was born 15 December, 1886, in Shpola, Ukraine. He died on 13 June, 1972, in Philadelphia, PA. Kitty died on 05 August 1980 in Philadelphia, PA.

4) Rebecca "Reba" Rovine - was born 12 April, 1891, in Norma, Salem County, NJ. She died in 1985 in Jenkintown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. She never married.

5) Sarah Rovine - was born 05 September, 1893, in Norma, Salem County, NJ. She married Abraham Brodsky, the brother of her sister Kitty's husband Herman Brodsky, on 07 February, 1917. The couple had 2 children,(see 3rd generation). Sarah died in July 1975 in Philadelphia, PA. Abraham Brodsky was born 15 April, 1897 in Shpola, Ukraine. He died in 1973 in Philadelphia, PA.

6) George Isaac Rovine - was born on 12 June, 1895 in Norma, Salem County, NJ. He married Rosanna Lipsitz, who was born on 05 July, 1907, in Camden, NJ. The couple had 2 children, (see 3rd generation). George died 27 August, 1993, in Philadelphia, PA. Rosanna died 24 May, 2001 on Philadelphia, PA.

7) Alexander L. Rovine - was born 20 June, 1897, in Norma, Salem County, NJ. He was married 3 times. His wives were: Rose Sagorsky, with whom he had 2 children, (see 3rd generation), Loretta, (surname unknown), and Mary Wainger, whom he divorced. Rose was born 11 March, 1904. Rose and Alex married on June 22, 1925, in Philadelphia, PA. She died in July, 1959 in Philadelphia, PA. Loretta died before Alexander, circa 1971, in Philadelphia, PA. Alexander and Mary Wainger divorced, date and place unknown. Alexander died on 18 June, 1998, in Norma, Salem, New Jersey.

8) Helen Rovine - was born 04 June, 1900, in Norma, Salem, New Jersey. She married Benjamin Grossman on 14 Octrober, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA. The couple had 3 children,(see 3rd generation). Helen died on 23 October, 1986, in Philadelphia, PA. Benjamin died on 10 July, 1982, in Philadelphia, PA.

Third Generation

Rose Rovine and her husband Hyman Backman had 3 children, as follows:

1) Pearl Backman - was born 23 June, 1905, in Philadelphia, PA. She married Charles Promislo on 16 Aug 1929, in Philadelphia. Charles was born 25 Apr 1898, Russia. They had 2 children (see 4th generation). Charles died on the 23 April, 1983, in Philadelphia, PA. Pearl died on 31 May, 1997, in Philadelphia, PA.

2) Irving William Backman - was born 20 March, 1912, in Philadelphia, PA. He married Beatric Belovsky, born 15 May, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA. They married 01 April, 1943, in Philadelphia, PA. They had 2 children (see 4th generation). Beatrice is alive as of October 2009 and living in Cincinnati, Ohio.

3) Edmund Backman - was born 12 March 1918, in Philadelphia, PA. He married Lola Meier Nathan, born November 9, 1923, in Hamburg, Germany, Lola's place of birth. They married on 30 December, 1945 and had 3 children (see 4th generation). Edmund died on 12 October, 2002, in Danville, Contra Costa, California. Lola is alive as of October 2009.

Kitty Rovine and her husband Herman Brodsky had 4 children, as follows:

1) Theodore Brodsky - was born November, 1915, in Philadelphia, PA. He never married and died on May 22, 1945, in Japan as a POW of the Japanese.

2) Milton Brodsky - was born 02 November 1919 in Philadelphia, PA. He married Wanda Frazier, born in 1922 in Eugene, OR. They had 2 children (see 4th generation). Milton died on 28 Aug 1994 in Sonoma, California. Wanda is still alive, as of October 2009.

3) Evelyn Brodsky - was born on 8 December, 1922, in Philadelphia, PA. She married Max M. Kalick, born in 1921 in Philadelphia, PA. The couple married on 01 March, 1949. They had 2 children, (see 4th generation). Max died 20 June, 1994, in Philadelphia, PA. Evelyn Brodsky is still alive, as of October 2009.

4) William Brodsky - was born 13 September, 1926, in Philadelphia, PA. His longtime companion is Fred van Dyk, born October 9, 1921, in Aurich, a town in the province of Hannover, Germany. William has contributed greatly to this genealogical project and the entire family appreciates his work.

1) William Aaron Brodsky - was born 08 January 1918 in PA. He married Duffy Daisy Weston, born 30 May 1929, in Cincinnati, OH. The couple married circa 1950. Place of marriage unknown. Wiliam and Duffy had 3 children, (see 4th generation). William died on 20 January, 2007. Duffy is still alive, as of October 2009.

2) Emanuel Brodsky - was born 27 December, 1924 in Atlantic City, NJ. He married Bernice Levine, born 27 July, 1927, in Philadelphia, PA. They had 2 children, (see 4th generation).

George Isaac Rovine and Rosanna Lipsitz had 2 children, as follows:

1) Joan Rovine - was born on 07 May, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA. She married Harvey Howard Levitan, born on 28 December, 1928, in Philadelphia, PA. They were married on 03 June, 1958, in Tel Aviv, Israel. They have 2 children, (see 4th generation).

2) Arthur William Rovine - was born on 29 April, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA. He married Phyllis Ellen Hamburger, born on 20 June, 1940. The marriage took place on April 7, 1963, in New York City. They have 2 children, (see 4th generation).

Alexander Rovine was married 3 times. There was no issue from his 2nd and 3rd marriages. He and his 1st wife, Rose Sagorsky, have 2 children, as follows:

1) Byron Rovine - was born 01 February, 1927, in Philadelphia, PA. He married Alice Jeanne Harpring, born on 19 February, 1928, in Louisville, KY. They have 3 children, (see 4th generation).

2) Robert Rovine - was born on 05 February, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA. He married Katherine Sontheimer, born on 09 June, 1941, in New York City. They married on 17 March, 1963, in Philadelphia, PA. Robert and Katherine have 4 children, (see 4th generation). Robert died on 28 October, 2008, in Elkins Park, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. Katherine is alive as of October 2009.

Helen Rovine and her husband, Benjamin Grossman, had 3 children, as follows:

1) Burton M. Grossman - was born October 28, 1925. He never married. According to records, and an interview with his sister, Arlene, he died of wounds suffered, on January 15, 1945 in Holland during WWII.

2) Judith Minna Grossman - was born 26 March, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA. She married Arthur Stolper, born on 06 January, 1931, in New York City. They married on 14 June, 1953, in Philadelphia, PA. The couple have 3 children, (see 4th generation). Arthur died on 07 December, 1982, in Philadelphia, PA. Judith remarried on 20 September, 1987, to Morton Schaeffer, born 30 May, 1928,
in Norristown, PA. There is no issue from this marriage.

3) Arlene Grossman - was born 30 January, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA. She married E. Victor Adlin, born on 20 April, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA. They married on 09 June, 1963, in Philadelphia, PA. Arlene and Victor have 2 children, (see 4th generation).

Fourth Generation

Pearl Backman and her husband Charles Promislo had 2 children, as follows:

1) Daniel Promislo - was born 15th November, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA. He married Estelle Carasso, born 07 February, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA. They were married June 10, 1961, in New York City. They have 3 children, (see 5th generation). Estelle died 12, April, 2006, in Philadelphia, PA. Daniel is alive as of 2009.

2) Deborah Ann Promislo - was born May 8, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA. She married
Larry Irving Weiss, born 31 March, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA. The couple was married on 01 September, 1956 in Philadelphia, PA. They have 2 children, (see 5th generation). Larry Irving Weiss died 03 Februry, 1992, in Philadelphia, PA. Deborah Ann is still alive, as of October 2009.

Irving William Backman and his wife Beatrice Belovsky had 2 children, as follows:

Sara Reed, born 04 December, 1953, in Springfield, MO. They were married on 01, 1972, in Springfield, MO. Robert Backman and Sara Reed were married for a 2nd time after her conversion to Judaism, 28 December, 1975 in Wichita, Kansas. They have 3 children, (see 5th generation). Both Robert and Beatrice are alive as of October 2009.

2) David Backman - was born 08 May, 1954, in Philadelphia, PA. David married Bonita Malit, born 10 April, 1954, in Philadelphia, PA. They have 2 children, (see 5th generation).

3) Amy Lois Backman - was born 30 June, 1954, in Philadelphia, PA. She married
Douglas Arthur Strayer, born 15 May, 1950, in Lexington Park, MD. They were married July 12, 1975, at Lake Tahoe, CA. The couple has 2 children, (see 5th generation).

1) Theodore Brodsky - was born in 1958 in CA. He was adopted by Milton and Wanda. He married Tami "Brodsky." Her maiden name is unknown as are her dates of birth and marriage. They have no children.

2) Linda Brodsky - was born February 5, 1959 in California. She was adopted by Milton and Wanda. She married Alfonse Derouaux, born 01 October, 1955 - place of birth unknown. They have 2 children, (see 5th generation).

1) Theodore Kalick - was born in 1947 in Philadelphia, PA. He married Laura Lowenthal, born 01 March, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY. They married on 27 October, 1972, in Monroeville, PA. The couple have 3 children, (see 5th generation).

2) Irving Kalick - was born in 1951 in Cincinnati, OH. He married Sally Shore, birth and marriage data unknown. The couple have 1 child, (see 5th generation). Irving and Sally divorced, (date unknown), and he married Sherri Radocaj, born 02 December, 1962, in Harrisburg, PA. They married on 09 February, 1992, in Hershey, PA. William Brodsky and his wife Duffy Daisy Weston have 3 children, as follows:

1) Lynne Brodsky - was born on 09 May, 1953, in Louisville, Kentucky. She married Robinson P. Levine, born 01 May, 1958, in Norwood, MA. They married on 29 September, 1991, in Lincoln, MA. They have no children as of October, 2009.

2) Lisa Brodsky - was born on 6 June, 1955, in Louisville, Kentucky. She married Jay Michael Ring, born November, 1953, in St. Louis, MO. The couple married in August, 1977 in Larchmont, NY. They have 1 child, (see 5th generation). Jay Michael Ring died on 24 December, 2007 in St. Louis, MO. Lisa Brodsky is still alive, as of October 2009.

3) Abigail Brodsky - was born 25 August, 1967, in Louisville, Kentucky. She married Stephen Russo, birth date unknown. They married on 12 August, 1994, in Winchester MA. Abigail and Stephen have 1 child, (see 5th generation). They divorced - date unknown. Abigail remarried James Sutherland, birth date and place unknown. They married in 2005 and have no children as of October, 2009.

1) Lawrence Alan Brodsky - born 20 March, 1949, in Atlantic City, NJ. He married Mary Averill, born 03 December, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA. The couple married on 27 December, 1974. Larry and Mary have 1 biological child, (see 5th generation). Mary was previously married to a man whose surname is Fitzgibbon. They have a son, Jeffrey Fitzgibbon. Although Larry has not formally adopted Jeffrey, he thinks of him as him own son and loves him as such.

2) Bradford Michael Brodsky - was born 30 March, 1952, in Aberdeen, MD. He is not married as of October, 2009.
