Project Synopsis
The JOWBR of JewishGen in coordination with the Ukraine Chernigov Research group of Rootsweb and the Ukraine SIG are working together to photograph and document all the remaining graves and headstones in the Jewish cemeteries found in Chernigov Gubernia or Province in Ukraine. Local photographers will be hired and the photographing will take place according to JOWBR guidelines in order to register all the names and inscription information in the JOWBR database. The towns scheduled to be photographed will be Chernigov, Borzna, Glukhov, Gorodnya, Konotop, Kozelets, Krolevets, Mglin, Nezhin, Novgorod-Seversk, Novozybkov, Oster, Sosnitsa, Starodub, Surazh, and Priluki.
Key Audiences
The key audience for this project are people whose ancestors lived in any of the above mentioned towns in Chernigov Gubernia.
Project Importance
To this day Chernigov retains a significant Jewish population and the information found on cemetery headstones can be unrivaled by any other documents obtained by genealogists. However they can be victim to history and the elements so the time is now to document every last one that remains. Having this available would benefit not just genealogical researchers, but also those seeking to understand patterns of Jewish history, religion and anthropology.
Project Description
Professional and volunteer researchers will extract data from the photographs, translate them into English, and enter the data into a spreadsheet template provided by JewishGen. Once those tasks are complete, JewishGen will integrate the new data into the JOWBR database
Estimated Cost
$300-$500 per town depending on the type and number tombstones available. The total cost to photograph the 16 towns in the project would thus be in the range of $5400-$8000.
